Refinishing Steps

Hand Stripping

Because hand stripping is very mild on the wood, Kell’s hand strips each piece of furniture.  By doing this, the grain of the wood will not be raised and glue joints will not be broken loose. Even veneer is hand stripped.

Repairs and Hand Sanding

After stripping all necessary repairs are carefully completed. Repairs may include gluing and/or re-fabricating broken or missing parts. After repairs are completed, the furniture is sanded by hand.

StainingThe customer chooses the color he or she would like the furniture stained. Each piece of wood absorbs stain differently and so we work closely with the customer to first view and approve a portion of the stained furniture. Once we are sure the customer is happy with the color, we proceed to stain the entire piece. We also perform custom color matching upon request.

SealingOnce the stain has completely dried, we spray three coats of sealer to seal and protect the wood. This provides a good base for the next and final step.

Spraying FinishThe final step in the refinishing process is spraying on three coats of finish. To ensure a smooth surface in the end, we hand sand the furniture between each of coats of finish. The finished furniture then has six coats of protection.
